Father’s Day is approaching. That means it’s not just time to start thinking about what kind of gift your old man might appreciate, but also to spend a few minutes pondering how your father has helped you become the person you are today.
While all of us grew up in different types of families, here are a few ways that your real estate career was very likely shaped by your dad. Some of them might apply just as well to your mom, but Mother’s Day was last month!
The value of home
Good real estate agents have a deep connection to the sense of home that their clients are seeking. In many cases, that comes from their experience being raised in a home by their parents. Mom and Dad likely both played a key role in establishing that sense of belonging and comfort that you are trying to replicate for others as a REALTOR®.
How to fix a house
If you know how to use a screwdriver, you very likely have Pops to thank. As an agent, home renovation and home repairs are a big factor whenever you’re selling a home. The better you are able to understand the condition of a home, as well as the time and money it will take to fix it up, the more valuable you are as an agent to your clients.
You work hard because you have bills to pay. But also likely because you learned from the example of your parents. These days, you may be able to appreciate why dad might have missed a Little League game or two because he was working late. The world of real estate does not necessarily operate on a 9-to-5 schedule, and sometimes you have to put in extra work to seal the deal.
Made sure you got educated
Be thankful for the time you got grounded for playing hookie or flunking math. Dad knew that it’s much harder to succeed in this world without an education. In many cases, our parents pushed us so hard to receive the education that they never got themselves. They knew that it would be good for us as people and professionals.
Treat people well
If you’re good at selling houses, you probably have your personality to thank. And there’s a good chance that much of that comes from dad. Are you friendly? Do you like telling jokes? Are you patient with people? Do you keep your promises? All of that helps you be a good REALTOR®.
